The picture above of my wife and I was taken several years ago. Not long ago, I looked at this picture and noticed my body language; I’m leaning in to Michelle. I hadn’t planned it this way when the shot was taken, it was spontaneous.
It hit me that when I’m leaning in to my relationship with Michelle, in general we do okay. This can be as simple as taking the time to listen to her, praying with her, or asking her out on a date.
When I back off, we drift.
Every couple has their moments when they drift. Schedules don’t line up, something hits the fan, there are hurt feelings or disagreements. Life happens. The important thing is to keep leaning in to each other, even when it’s hard.
During the 31 years we’ve been married, Michelle and I have had stretches where we’ve drifted for days, weeks, even months, but we’ve kept going back to each other. It’s not always me who leans in. We both have to work at it. While the husband is the spiritual leader and should make pursuing his wife a lifelong habit, the man isn’t always in a good place so there will be times when the wife provides the spark.
It’s the same with our relationship with God.
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
Hebrews 2:1
Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord;
his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us as the showers,
as the spring rains that water the earth.”
Hosea 6:3
There are some who’ve attended church for years, even decades, but don’t have a passionate love relationship with the Lord. The prayer life is choked or non-existent. They rarely hear His voice, and their hearts are empty. Maybe there’s a wound they never healed from and their heart is walled off. Perhaps they’ve allowed smartphones, media, or the pleasures and entertainment of this world to choke their relationship with Him. Like most Christians, they’re isolated and rarely if ever meet with another brother or sister in Christ, making it easy for the enemy to ensnare them in sin.
Thankfully, we always have the remedy.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8
It begins with a childlike prayer, “Lord, I’ve drifted from you for a long time. I’m tired of playing religious games and being little more than a Sunday Christian. Please reveal yourself to me. I’m worn out… I want to know you. Please reveal yourself to me.”
Then keep leaning into Him. For the rest of your life.
Do the same with your spouse.
