Summary:

This workbook is designed for those going through a 12-Step program for adult children of dysfunctional families.  It is to be used in conjunction with a support group.  It focuses on the spiritual process necessary for healing but does not claim a specific religious affiliation.  The book is divided into chapters to be completed at the rate of one per week.  The first few weeks cover introductory topics such as:

·    evaluating the reader’s needs, personal story, and current spiritual condition;

·    remembering past involvement with support groups and agreement contract for joining this support group;

·    choosing a recovery partner and signing another agreement contract; and

·    learning about and identifying in the reader’s own life common behavior characteristics often resulting from growing up in dysfunctional homes.

The authors then take the reader through each of the 12 steps, focusing on understanding that step and preparing to take it. They also suggest group activities related to each step.

The appendices include facilitator instructions; group member guidelines; a meeting announcement template; example of a weekly schedule; advice on formatting the meetings; and further resource materials.

Why does FASTEN recommend this resource?

This workbook would be useful to anyone, of any religion, going through the 12 steps as a way of recovering from growing up in a dysfunctional family. It is thorough and easy to read. It offers clear explanations of the 12 steps and helpful illustrations to illuminate understanding. The Q&A activities help ensure that all group members are fully participating and the various resource materials included make this a practical and helpful aid for coordinators of 12-Step meetings.
