Now, lets get one thing straight off the bat, I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Ok, now that's been cleared up, I can get on with my viewpoint of Sexual Addiction (coming from one who struggles with it).
No matter how badly our addictions afflict us, we as men (and women) are Warriors for God first and formost. As such, we need to be on the defense for all forms of attack our enemies throw at us. As sex addicts, we must be ever vigilant against Satan's weapons of the world (internet porn, phone sex, sexual themed advertisements, sexual novels, etc.) however, there is a disturbing trend that I have noticed within the world of Sexual addiction recovery. I believe that it is yet another weapon Satan is using to keep us in bondage; because as long as we are slaves to our lust, we are no threat to him.
Have you ever heard the phrase, "Once an addict, always an addict." I'm sure you have because it is the prevailing trend in today's addiction recovery market. Simply stated it means that you'll always be addicted to something, and the only way to help yourself is to constantly be in recovery. I don't like this thought process because, through hard work and reliance on God, you can change yourself and be free of addiction.
I say this because addiction, as defined, is to be given up, or surrendered to, a habit. Think about yourselves in your times of strenght, when you're relying on God's power and not just your own. Are you consumed with thoughts of sex, do images of porn burn through your mind, do you spend countless hours on the internet with porn? NO! In your times of strength you do not, because your thought process has changed, even if it is only for that time. You are not surrendered to your habit, and therefore, not an addict.
I think that a lot people search for an identity, and calling themselves an addict, gives them an identity, something to relate to. Falling into this trend of, "once an addict always an addict," they move from one of Satan's traps into another; the trap of addiction to recovery. To them they become so wrapped up in the recovery process, the highs and lows of success and failure, that they become slaves to both the addiction and the process of recovery.
We have become, at one point or another, slaves to our sin. Sin starts in the mind and with each bad choice we make, we become deeper in bondage to that sin; thus becoming addicts. We make the choice to be consumed by it, and we make the choice to put a stop to it. We make the choice to become utterly dependent on God to stop the maddness before it destroys us. With that simple choice, we again become the Warriors that God made us to be. We can have a change of mind, we can break the cycle and not be constantly consumed by those thoughts that eat us alive. We can fight back and we can win.
Not believing the mantra of, "once an addict, always an addict," can, I believe, be the catalyst that breaks one free from their addiction. I know it has been for me. Now, I am not an addict. I have been one in the past, and it can again be in my future if I let it. Satan knows my weakness and he'll use it to break me whenever the opportunity arises. I must be ever vigilant against the weapons of the enemy, and they are many. Remember, he has free reign of this world and the world has been shaped by him. Sex is everywhere, and for those who are prone to sex addiction, it is hard for us.
Remember, you are not a saved sinnner, but now a SAINT. Your old self is no more. You are not a product of your sin, but a Warrior for God. You can break free. Your mind can be free. Keep up the good fight, meet with your fellow Warriors, and always desperately depend on God.
