I am contributing this topic because of a problem I have encountered from time to time (thankfully not very often). That is, the discovery of pages torn from pornographic magazines, strewn along public paths, grass verges, shrubberies in public places. This sort of thing might occasionally be the result of high winds and garbage being displaced from bins. However, I think that a lot of it is deliberately carried out by those who want to corrupt other people. I have found it near a primary school (in 2004) and I have also found it today, as I was walking to the shops to get some milk. It was several feet away from my eyes so I didn't look at it, except to recognize what it was. As soon as I recognized it, I picked it up, averting my eyes, screwed it up and put it in my ruck sack. I prayed to God on the way to the shops to ask him how I was to dispose of it. I would not like to say that picking this stuff up is something everyone should do but if you know for certain that you are strong enough to resist the temptation to look at it, then I strongly advise you pray to God, pick it up, avert your eyes, screw it up and get rid of it properly. By doing this, you help protect children and adults from being corrupted by it.

One thing I have been particularly sensitive to lately is one of the TV ads that comes on during one of our favorite shows. It is always after 10PM (It's a CSI show) and this particular ad for women's underwear is provocative and I find it offensive.
I sent JCPenney an email to let them know how I felt about it. Probably won't do any good. But I don't see how any male could watch that commercial without it seeming like porn. It made me feel better to get that off my chest. But I am not going to hold my breath for a response.
Just venting...

Mostly I don't watch TV (maybe an hour or two a week, plus a rented movie), but I have seen that ad. After being riveted for a few seconds, I managed to turn away. I'm working on getting to where the "turn away" part is immediate in such situations. I think a good sign is that now it embarrasses me, whereas a year or so ago I'd have been pleasantly entertained... As you observe, for me, it is porn, or has the same effects. I've gotten to where I avoid network TV altogether...

Hi, Suzi, it's true that porn is all around us in all the gradations from very very soft to very very hard!

I don't really have much to add to this thread beyond commending Stephen for his service. In many areas where I have lived, it was not uncommon for people to discard porn magazines and videos by throwing them in the woods or by the side of roads. I am ashamed to report that both as a young person and as an adult I found this a source of supply.
I assume many of these things were thrown away by men trying to free themselves from their habit, and too embarassed to get rid of them in their own trash bins. I feel for these men, but their solution certainly helped to start and to fuel my addiction. At times in my life, it really poisoned what should have been peaceful walks in the woods into prospecting trips for porn. I'm saddened at how I robbed myself of even the pure appreciation of God's forests.
I do a lot of cycling on country roads, moving at slow speeds (a little slower each year ) and looking at the edge of the road. Although the Internet seems to have drastically reduced the aundance of porn I encounter this way, there still is the occasional bit. Like Stephen, I avert my eyes and stick it in my bag and dispose of it at home. I certainly encourage anyone with the will and ability to take care to do this sort of thing. I lost some of my childhood innocence to other people's porn, and I feel for the kids now who are being hurt in the same way.

Thanks, Tim, for your sensitive reply and sharing the very sad facts about your woodland walks as a child. Some might consider pornography (hard core or other) and its effect on young minds is less serious than physical abuse. It's a different kind of abuse and I think the impact on the growing child and the emerging adult is not fully appreciated or taken seriously. I think this is because the porn problem in our society is so prevalent. We can't go anywhere without exposure to something indecent, usually through advertising and the media.
