An online poll suggests 50% of Christian men and 20% of Christian women are addicted to pornography.  I personally cannot think it's that high, at least for addicts.  I would say the numbers could be right for Christians that have viewed pornography in the last year or so, but addicted?

Any thoughts on this?

I've rarely heard of a guy who looked at porn just one time and then walked away; the stuff's that powerful. Some guys struggle with binging every day or week, while others might be able to hold themselves back by willpower or circumstances for 3, 6 or even 9 months - and then fall again. I've been both types. Unconfessed sin leads to bondage (addiction);  my experience has been that it's rare for Christian men to confess looking at porn and/or masturbating to it immediately afterwards. To intentionally view porn is to open up a spiritual door for evil influence in the heart, so yes, there is a measure of enslavement to sin/addiction going on.

What Mike said is very much my experience. I stayed up hours into the night to view porn, and let the gulf of lies open between my wife and myself. We are separated 19 months. We do not talk about it, and I am trying to think how to verbalize what she knows already, just to have a groundwork of trust as we are parents.

I was full of violent anger at my wife for her fighting with me. I saw her vicious temper and whitewashed "clean" vocabulary no matter how hot she got, and yet never judged myself instead of her. I am trying to come out of isolation and make brothers of fellow sex addicts in recovery, and heal from a deadly cycle of lust and rage.

Hi.

I find that statistic absolutely astounding.

I think it begs a question. I have found in my life and ministry the reality of Jesus words to us in John 8:32...

Jesus said, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (NIV)

Conversely, Romans 6:16a tells us, " Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey..." (NIV). Here we see very clearly that obeying Satan will lead to bondage to Satan. Satan's only tool against us is a lie (he is, in truth, utterly defeated!). The only way he can get us to obey him, is to lead us to believe one of his lies, then act in accordance with it.

So, if we believe and act on the truth, we find freedom. If we believe and act on a lie, we find bondage.

Although we know that in the Scriptures we have the truth, yet in regards to moral purity, we are not free!!

This suggests that somehow, we must be misunderstanding the truth of Scripture related to sex, the body, nudity, and/or moral purity. Else we would not be seeing such a rampant addiction to sex among believers!

So, if we can isolate the lie that we believe and teach within the church (and/or within our culture) and replace it with the truth, does it not stand to reason that we would discover that moral purity would not be so uncommon or inaccessible?

My question for you all is this:

What are the basic understandings we have about each of the areas I listed above, and which area, if any, have issues surrounding them that we should reexamine in light of Scripture?

Areas for reexamination

Sex:

The Body:

Nudity:

Moral Purity:

(others?):

Take one, or take all of them, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Can we not put everything on the table and reexamine them in light of the Scriptures?

Thanks,

Pastor Ed
