My first pet (as opposed to family pet) was a complete surprise. Coming back from walking on a reef, snorkling in the rock pools, I heard a scratching sound among the rock crevices. All the rocks round this coast were strangely twisted and quite jagged. The noise came from a rusty tin, the top of which had been squashed flat. Prising this apart, inside was a tortoise. I wondered why anybody would be so cruel as to leave a tortoise in a rusty tin to die. The tortoise was a pet for about a year. He loved eating clover and he was amazingly fast on his legs, especially if there was a clover patch ahead. Being such a fast walker, he managed to escape when my attention wandered and I lost sight of him for at least six months if not more before I found him under one of the hedges. To be correct, I don't actually know what sex the tortoise was but at the time I thought it was far too ugly to be a female!

how sweet! tortoises are fun
what did you feed it?
I wanted a dog.. dad wouldnt let me... i think part of it is probably because of the hurt that he had since he had to eat the dog he raised during the hardship times that followed the great leap forward movement, yes ironic isnt it. it was backwards.
God bless!
i will continue praying for you guys
keep clean!

Well, anyone who has been bored enough to read my profile knows that it is cats. We did have one dog when I was in my teens, a shelty/border collie mix, who was sweet and very smart. We also had a number of rabbits and gerbils. For quite a while we took in monarch caterpillars because the birds would eat the cocoons. It is a remarkable process to let the newly hatched butterfly's tickly feet cling to your finger while it pumps the moisture from its wings, walk up and down your arm once it is strong enough to be upright, then exhilarating as it soars in to the air to start the cycle anew.
And did I mention cats? :-)

ahh reminds me, i raised some chickens (little chicks) and a hen. I remember when i saw our cook take it and kill it
and the chicks later died as a source of my meal, my parents lied and said the eagle snatched them away during the night...
then i had 2 pigeons, one of them got sick.. so we sent them to our friend's house as a source of food...

also, when i was young i scared dogs!! as i grew older they scared me, not as much anymore now though... After all, she has a dog and it is a quite cute pup , so furry!

I recall I tried feeding tortoise cockroaches and other insects but the only thing he seemed to like eating was clover so I spent a lot of time pulling up clumps of that. As he spent a fair amount of time in a box, I expect that the times he was out of that and roaming round the garden, gave him a taste of freedom. When I lost him a second time (for good), I decided not to keep any animal in captivity so there were no more personal pets. I did try and save a baby hedgehog which was in a ditch outside the school. I had no idea what to feed it and unfortunately, gave it cows milk. I kept it in my slipper in the clothes cupboard. Fleas galore. I don't think Mum knew. She wouldn't have animals in the house, except the dogs. The hedgehog died after a few days and I was heart-broken. Never give cows milk to a hedgehog, I was later told (about 25 years later). The thing they like is tinned dog's or cat's meat, and plain water.

Truthseeker, thanks for sharing about your pets and the monarch butterflies. I won't forget the beautiful big (and the small as well) butterflies of all colours, shapes, that I saw as a boy. Especially the fast, gigantic ones of green, blue or yellow colouring that had an iridescence about them. Much better to see them in the wild than mounted in a box for show.

Geeky, how terribly sad to hear your pets became meals. What part of the world was that? Was your family very poor? I hope you don't mind my asking.

I own a desert tortoise that my now deceased father bought me when I was in third grade. That makes him now about 38-39 years old since I got him so I guess I am a bit of an expert with these. He hibernates in the closet in the winter and comes out in the spring to eat again. They said when my father bought him that he was a box turtle but he is a desert tortoise. They are now endangered and protected. here is picture of what he looks like.

He loves dandelions, clover flowers, grasses, fruits, and vegetables!

How lovely, I would love to have a turtle/tortouise for a pet...maybe one day soon. I have lots of turtles, soft, cuddly and ornamental turtles in our home but no real ones yet!
We do however have 2 dogs, 1 small and 1 large. 1 rabbit and 1 guinea pig at the moment. I have always loved animals and it is great for the children.

I have a dog named Niu2,
He is so cute!!! when I got home from work, he would wag his tail and go to me, begging to have a rub on his head. He is a bit small, only as high as 50 cm, yet ferocious! he attacked my neighbour's dogs, my guests, even my maid, and my brother! yet so gentle when he comes to me and my sisters.
I just love that dog...

i've had many animals in my life. right now, i have a wonderful mutt dog, a hamster and a goldfish. my dog is so cute and has the best personality. he has a big round belly and short legs. it's so funny to watch him run.
i had a demon dog on time. he must have come from a puppy mill. he hated me and everyone else for that matter. he was a poodle but he had the temperament of a rabid pittbull. he loved to clean my cats litter box (if you know what i mean). he freaked out if he saw anyone looking at him. i loved him though, it was hard but i did.
